Privacy Policy ← back to the ray tracer

Last updated: 7 September 2026

1. What this site is

This site renders a ray traced image in your browser. There are no accounts, no logins and no file uploads. The settings you choose (canvas size, sphere radius, colours, eye and light positions) are held in memory for the duration of your visit and are discarded when you close the page. Nothing you render is stored on the server.

2. Analytics

This site uses GoatCounter, a privacy friendly analytics service, to get a rough idea of how many people visit. GoatCounter sets no cookies, does not track you across websites and does not build a profile of you. For each page view it records: the page address, the referring page (if any), your browser and operating system, your screen size and your country. Your IP address is used only to work out the country and to tell one visit from another within a single day; it is not stored.

The details are described in the GoatCounter privacy policy and GDPR notes. If you would rather not be counted, block the domain gc.zgo.at in your browser or content blocker, or run localStorage.setItem('skipgc', 't') in your browser console once for this site.

3. Cookies

One strictly necessary cookie is set (_ray_tracer_web_key). It holds a signed session token used to protect the page against cross site request forgery. It contains no personal data, is not used for analytics or advertising and expires when your browser session ends.

4. Rate limiting

The number of renders a single visitor can request is limited, so that the server stays usable for everyone. To enforce that, your IP address is held briefly in the server's memory along with a counter. It is not written to a database, it is discarded once the counter expires and it is not shared with anyone.

5. Server logs

The hosting provider records ordinary web server logs (IP address, timestamp, requested page, browser identification) for security and troubleshooting. These are kept only as long as the provider needs them for those purposes.

6. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct or erase personal data concerning you, to restrict or object to its processing, and to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. Since this site keeps no accounts and stores no identifiable records, there is normally nothing to retrieve or delete, but you are welcome to ask.
